چکیده

The background colouration of the spadefoot toad Pelobates fuscus, an anuran species found in Europe is typically light grey/yellow grey/light olive-green. However, atypical specimen, whose was brightly coloured yellowish green (light green/lime/yellow coloured), with darker small spots distributed through dorsal parts and four main slightly shaped observed Poland (Great Poland, Mościejewo village), near to two ponds. ecological effects individual can be adaptively important, its similarity vegetation (predator avoidance).

The identity of Rana margaritifera Laurenti, 1768 (Anura, Bufonidae).

Rana margaritifera was described by Laurenti in 1768 and currently is associated to the genus Rhinella, under the combination Rhinella margaritifera. Currently, the R. margaritifera species group consists of 16 recognized species. Furthermore, many additional species have been suggested to exist in this group which highlights the ambiguity surrounding the identity of Rhinella margaritifera and ...

The change in genetic diversity down the core-edge gradient in the eastern spadefoot toad (Pelobates syriacus).

Several hypotheses are available to predict change in genetic diversity when approaching peripheral populations. We used the eastern spadefoot toad in Israel as a model system to examine these hypotheses using population genetics analyses and network theory. Our results contradicted most of the predictions from the 'abundant centre' model, that edge populations should have lower density and low...

GABA-immunoreactive photoreceptors in the retina of an anuran, Pelobates fuscus.

We have recently started to unravel the retinal neurochemistry of an anuran species, the spadefoot toad (Pelobates fuscus), because of its unique lifestyle. The immunolabelling experiments included tests to localize the major inhibitory transmitter, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) to subsets of retinal neurons, using commercially available antibodies. Apart from the regular GABA-immunoreactive p...

Variation in repeat length and heteroplasmy of the mitochondrial DNA control region along a core-edge gradient in the eastern spadefoot toad (Pelobates syriacus).

Peripheral populations are those situated at the distribution margins of a species and are often subjected to more extreme abiotic and biotic conditions than those at the core. Here, we hypothesized that shorter repeat length and fewer heteroplasmic mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) copies, which are associated with more efficient mitochondrial function, may be related to improved survival under extrem...
